This led to a problematic narrative about its main dynamics and its so-called decline, as those travellers had no proper knowledge about the region and strictly followed their own imperialist and colonialist agenda. New sources in Arabic and Turkish as well as archive materials from Libya and Turkey greatly challenges with these Eurocentric narratives about the trade. New findings demonstrate an entirely different dynamic for the trans-Saharan trade as well as debunk the so-called decline of it. Furthermore, the new findings show the nature of the involvement of the Ottomans and French after the 1850, greatly shaping the destination of the trade. While the Ottomans were aimed to support the trans-Saharan Trade, French applied atrocities against civil merchants to destroy the trade.
