Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Karim al-Maghili was an Algerian Muslim scholar, jurist and reformer originally from Tlemcen. His influence was decisive for the islamization and political structuring of Western Sudan and the Hausa country in the 15th century. His action enabled the birth of an Islamic state ideology in Western Sudan and the Hausa country. The main questions of this research are : What was the status of Islam in Kano, Katsina, Gobir and Gao before the arrival of al-Maghili ? And, how did al-Maghili’s intervention between 1490 and 1510 transform the relationship between political power and Islam in Western Sudan in general and in Hausa countries in particular ? The overall objective of this study is to analyze the role of al-Maghili as an agent of politicization of Islam in Western and Central Sudan at the end of the 15th century. Methodologically, the study adopts a critical textual analysis of the primary sources of al-Maghili and other chronicles such as Tarikh es-Sudan or Kano chronicle. And the main expected result is that al-Maghili is not the cause of the Hausa and Songhai Islamization, despite being the first to formulate a coherent Islamic political project for the Sudanese city-states.

Malikism is an orthodox legal school attributed to Malik Ibn Anas (713-795), Imam of the holy city of Medina (that’s why this school named «the School of Medina»). It’s a Sunni legal school, like Hanafism, Shafiism and Hanbalism. The Maliki school was established in most of western Sudan with the arrival of the Almoravids around the 11th century, during their victory over the Ghana Empire. The reign of Askia Mohamed (1493-1528) was one of Maliki predominance in Timbuktu. Askia was thus a great Maliki disciple who imposed Islam in his kingdom as the state religion. He also gave every consideration to the Maliki intellectuals of the Empire.
